Manitoba Liberals Call for Province to Recall Legislature Early & Step Up With Humanitarian Assistance for Ukraine

February 24, 2022

Treaty 1 Territory, Homeland of the Red River Métis, Winnipeg, MB - Manitoba Liberals have written to the PC government and opposition NDP calling for an emergency debate on the Russian invasion of Ukraine and for the Manitoba Government to step up with humanitarian aid.

In the letter, signed by Manitoba Liberal Leader Dougald Lamont, MLA Jon Gerrard and MLA Cindy Lamoureux, they wrote in part:

"We are writing to request an immediate recall of the Manitoba Legislature for an emergency debate on the matter and so that members can have the opportunity to pass a unanimous resolution in support of Ukraine, and for the Manitoba Government to step up with humanitarian assistance.

In January 2022, in response to Russian threats, the Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) and the Canada-Ukraine Foundation (CUF) established a Humanitarian Relief Committee and Fund which aims to coordinate and deliver humanitarian aid/relief in Ukraine. On January 31, 2022, the Government of Saskatchewan contributed $100,000 to the Fund.

We urge the Province of Manitoba to support Ukrainians with humanitarian aid by making a significant contribution to the UCC-CUF Humanitarian Relief Committee and Fund immediately."

Liberals say that an emergency debate would provide every MLA with an opportunity to speak to the urgent matter.
