Treaty 1 Territory, Métis Homeland, Winnipeg, MB - Manitoba Liberals are pleased the PCs have finally decided to cover 80% of Cochlear Implant Processors after Dr. Jon Gerrrard, Manitoba Liberal Health Critic and MLA for River Heights, has been advocating for their coverage for over two years.
A cochlear implant is an electronic device that partially restores hearing. It can be an option for people who have severe hearing loss from inner-ear damage who are no longer helped by using hearing aids.
Gerrard has been working with advocate Gladys Nielsen for over two years by creating and reading a petition in the Legislature, asking about Cochlear Implants in Question Period, and helping organize a rally in front of the Legislature in October 2021.
"Dr. Gerrard was the first to recognize and support the need for Government financial assistance for all adult Manitobans who require a Cochlear Implant Processor replacement. I believe that his outstanding advocacy, commitment, compassion and leadership is paramount in bringing this positive outcome," said Nielsen. "I am forever grateful to Dr. Gerrard for all he has done in helping me to maintain an interactive and productive lifestyle. He is the very best of humankind!"
"Jon made it is his mission to ensure that people with cochlear implants get replacement batteries so they can keep hearing," said Dougald Lamont, Manitoba Liberal Leader and MLA for St. Boniface. "This would not have happened without Jon as a tireless and passionate advocate."
